Item Summary:
The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) has made available through the State Homeland Security Grant Program funding specifically for protection of the water distribution system and fire hydrants.
 
The water distribution system has approximately 760 hydrants. The backflow prevention required would include the addition of a valve to the foot of the hydrant. Staff has coordinated this protection idea with the City Fire Department and they are supportive.

On February 2, 2010 the Public Safety & Public Works Committee recommended placing this item on the February 17, 2010 Mayor and Council Agenda.
 
Financial Impact:
There is no grant match required. The only cost will be staff supervision.
