Title

Approval of a Resolution Establishing Sustainability Policies for the City including an Energy Efficient Traffic Signals Policy, a Lights Out/Power Down Policy and a No-Idle Policy.

Presented by Aaron Bovos, Deputy City Administrator

Body

Item Summary:

This resolution establishes three policies to encourage staff members to be cognizant of their energy consumption and to promote activities which minimize the City’s impact on the environment.

Highlights of these policies are as follows:

Energy Efficient Traffic Signals:

1. Light emitting diodes (LED) will be installed in all newly constructed traffic signals, including school signals;

2. LED's will be retrofitted to all existing fixtures within six months.

Lights Out/Power Down Policy:

1. All electrical devices are to be turned off unless in use;

2. Energy saving modes/features should be enabled whenever possible;

3. Lighting is to be on only when in use;

4. Use of natural lighting is encouraged whenever possible.

No-Idle Policy:

1. Drivers of City vehicles are to turn off vehicles when parked until necessary to depart;

2. Vehicles are not allowed to idle greater than 3 minutes in any one-hour period;

3. Exemptions exist for Public Safety vehicles, vehicles with passengers, and for severe or extreme weather.

The policies adopted within this resolution will ultimately become part of the City of Roswell Sustainability Program.
