Description:

Transportation Department is testing two types of LED fixtures in our Main Street Period Lighting in the Citys parking lot on Mimosa Blvd Ext.

These lights were installed on April 5th as a test to see if they offer a lower wattage and longer life span with a similar feel to the standard lights. LED street lights have the potential to help reduce the Citys electric bill and lessen the maintenance.

The primary appeal of LED street lighting is energy efficiency compared to incandescent bulbs of the same luminance. Research continues to improve the efficiency of newer models. Typically an LED light is up to 60 percent more efficient than previous models, lasts for 12 years, and allows for cost recovery through energy savings in only three years.

An LED street light based on a 901 milliwatt output LED can normally produce the same amount of (or higher) luminance as a traditional light, but requires only half of the power consumption

LED Lights are generally a brighter and a whiter glow. We have placed bronze colored lenses on LED Test #1 and it does have a softer glow than LED Test #2 light. However, #2 can be reduced by 50% if desired. The current 150 watt incandescent High Pressure Sodium bulb puts out a soft yellow glow.

We have borrowed these two lights from a local vendor, Saturn Flex Systems, to showcase the LED technology. We will also need to present this to HPC and ask them to view the test lights and provide feedback.

Comments:

Staff will continue with this test for several months to gain feedback prior to making further plans.
