Description:
The Transportation Department is modifying the design of the Midtown Streetscape center turn lane from stamped synthetic asphalt to Concrete Whitetopping.
In the original Midtown Streetscape design, colored stamped synthetic asphalt was to be used for the center turn lane. Recently, the contractor, Urey Companies, notified the City that the synthetic colored asphalt was no longer available in this country and that the City would now have to order this product directly from the manufacturer located in the United Kingdom. Considering the challenges of future availability for repairs, staff has decided to change from the synthetic asphalt to stamped Concrete Whitetopping. This product is available locally and can be obtained when repairs are needed.
This product has been approved by GDOT for this application. The Concrete Whitetopping will have nearly the same final appearance as the synthetic asphalt. It will be colored and stamped and will likely wear better than the asphalt.
Comments:
This contract change should not have a significant impact to the total cost. Staff will update the Committee as to the final cost.
