Discussion of a letter from the Georgia Department of Public Safety regarding the Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspection Program, Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) - Guidance

Body

With recent changes that have occurred in the State’s commercial vehicle inspection program as well as changes made in the laws governing these inspections, the Department of Public Safety is NOT renewing its MOA with local law enforcement agencies.  This MOA is slated to expire on September 30, 2011. The department has two officers assigned to the traffic unity who are trained to conduct these inspections.  We receive no funding for this program.  The officers do not perform these functions on a full-time basis; however, these inspections were an important part of our traffic safety program.

After September, our officers cannot conduct any inspections of commercial vehicles.  However, they may continue to conduct enforcement of State laws.  They will also continue to use their training and experience working with commercial vehicles when conducting serious motor vehicle collisions.
