Body
Item Summary:
Participation in this grant requires the eight (8) municipalities and Fulton County to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) because Fulton is certified as a disparate county. This is similar to the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Formula Grant that was approved on April 13, 2009 in the amount of $71,894.01 under the stimulus package. Justice Funding received under this grant will be used by the Roswell Police Department to purchase and upgrade radio communications equipment. The Police Department will have a total of four (4) years to spend the grant funds. The MOU stipulates the City of Atlanta Police Department as the lead agency. The City of Atlanta has agreed that no additional compensation from the participating cities is needed to administer the JAG grant program for the county.
JAG Funds may be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, information systems for criminal justice, and criminal justice related research and evaluation activities that will improve or enhance: law enforcement programs; prosecution and court programs; prevention and education programs; corrections and community corrections programs; drug treatment and enforcement programs; planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs; and, crime victim and witness programs (other than compensation).
Committee or Staff Recommendation:
Staff recommends approval. The deadline for grant submission is July 9th and the City was notified on May 28th. The MOU and Resolution must be approved thirty days prior to the submission deadline which did not allow time for this item to go to Committee in advance.
Financial Impact:
No matching funds or future year commitment is required.
