Item Summary:
The Historic Preservation Division of the State Department of Natural Resources has made available the “Historic Cemetery Heritage Tourism Grant Program Round #2”. The purpose of the grant program is to assist local communities in promoting their historic cemeteries through heritage tourism. The maximum grant award is $2,500. Grant funds are 50 percent state/50 percent local matching and will be awarded on a competitive basis. This grant represents a second round of funding for the “2008 Historic Cemetery Heritage Tourism Grant” in which the City submitted a grant application but did not receive an award. The City was encouraged to reapply for a possible second round of funding which was to be announced in early 2009. This second round of funding, the “Historic Cemetery Heritage Tourism Grant Program Round #2”, was announced in March 2009.

Staff requests approval to proceed with the application for the “Historic Cemetery Heritage Tourism Grant Program Round #2”. The staff would again request a grant award of $2,500 which would require a $2,500 match from the City. There would be no change in scope from the 2008 grant application which proposed to fund an interpretive sign for each cemetery located in the Historic District. The Historic Preservation Division anticipates the announcement of grant recipients in May 2009. Staff estimates that the signs would be fabricated and installed by May 2010, should the City receive the grant award.
