Staff Recommendation
Staff recommends approval of the application for an addition at 1003 Canton Street, with the following conditions:
1. Leave the existing roof line on the front façade;
2. Leave the existing 4/4 window in the original gable on the north elevation;
3. Leave a portion of the existing original gable visible on the north elevation;
4. New addition should have a flat roof with parapet that matches the height of the existing rear addition parapet instead of matching the historic gable from the original portion of the structure;
5. Replace the three fixed double windows with two large, operable double windows that match the dimensions of those on the original portion of the house.
Issue
The applicant is proposing to build a 174 square foot addition on the northeast portion of the building. The addition will be an extension of an existing storage room and will not project out further to the north or east than the existing footprint. The addition will be clad in wood siding to match the existing structure. The applicant is proposing 6/6 aluminum clad wood windows with ¾” applied muntins (Anderson A-Series).
History
The structure located at 1003 Canton Street was constructed in 1943 according to the Fulton County Tax Digest and is classified as “Historic” on the Historic Properties Map. The building was constructed as a residence and has since been converted to commercial use. The structure has been added onto at least four times, but there is no record of these additions.
